The Finger Lakes Land Trust (FLLT) moved quickly when it learned that 22 acres of woodland on Keuka Lake’s Bluff Point were listed for sale and at risk of development. The property is in a prominent location on West Bluff Drive and features 1,500 feet of road frontage.
The Land Trust successfully competed with other prospective buyers and secured a contract to purchase the land for $330,000. The organization has set a fundraising goal of $400,000 to complete the acquisition, cover associated transaction costs, and contribute to its Stewardship Fund for long-term monitoring and stewardship of the land. ACQUISITION of the Bluff Point property will ensure that the site’s woodlands continue to stabilize erodible slopes and reduce runoff into nearby Keuka Lake. Ownership by the Land Trust will also safeguard scenic vistas for which Bluff Point is well known. Once the acquisition is complete, a natural resource inventory and long-term management plan will be established.
Strengthening the Conservation Landscape
This latest acquisition is the fourth land protection project undertaken by the Finger Lakes Land Trust at Bluff Point. The organization acquired two parcels of woodland in 2024 on the east side of the Bluff and holds a perpetual conservation easement that protects the tip of Bluff Point from development.
With one of the parcels acquired in 2024, the Land Trust opened its Waldershare Acres Preserve to the public last year. This 30-acre woodland on East Bluff Drive features a half-mile loop hiking trail that is a popular destination for hikers, bird watchers, and dog walkers.
Within the Keuka Lake watershed, the organization has also established the Botsford Nature Preserve at Big Gully and secured more than 1,000 acres of fields and forest on private property through the use of perpetual conservation easements.
