Employment Opportunity: Senior Accountant

The Senior Accountant position will report directly to the Chief Operating Officer (COO), providing a high level of financial oversight and accounting support to assist in the growth and future development of the Finger Lakes Land Trust.

Responsibilities

Organizational Financial Sustainability

  • Oversee the finance and accounting operations, ensuring internal controls are followed, evaluating reporting methods, monitoring expenditures and restricted funds tracking;
  • Assist COO with the organization’s annual budget development;
  • Assist COO and CEO with long-term financial forecasting for annual budget and strategic planning;
  • Work closely with COO, Board Treasurer and Audit Committee Chair to create scheduled Finance and Audit Committee agendas and coordinate Committee meetings and materials for both;
  • Provide necessary financial reporting, preparation and review of financials for annual audit and 990 Review;
  • Production and submission of 1099s;
  • Analyze and share financial data and reports impacting programming and workforce planning.

Accounting Processes

  • Maintain and optimize Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) as needed;
  • Process invoices and prepare checks for signature as needed;
  • Have organized and systematic approaches to record keeping and transactions;
  • Process bank deposits, including, but not limited to, gifts and rent payments;
  • Monthly reconciliation of bank and investment accounts;
  • Process reimbursement for employee expenses;
  • File grant expenditure reports and payment requests as needed;
  • Process accounts payable and receivable, tracking income and expenses accordingly;
  • Assist COO with other financial duties as needed.

Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree in accounting, finance or related field with relevant experience required, Bachelor’s preferred;
  • A Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation a plus;
  • Proficiency in accounting software and advanced Excel skills are essential;
  • Extensive knowledge of budgeting, fiscal management, and generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) as related to general office accounting;
  • Strong ability to analyze, prepare, format, and present data in a variety of complex statistical reports;
  • Ability to plan and coordinate multiple timelines; highly organized with keen attention to detail;
  • Excellent computer skills, including but not limited to Outlook and Excel;
  • Excellent interpersonal written and verbal communication skills;
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and diplomacy and keep confidentiality.

Additional Information

This full-time position is located in the Land Trust’s main office in Ithaca, NY. Salary range for this position is $65,000-$76,407 dependent upon experience and education and includes competitive benefits such as Health, Simple IRA and generous vacation, PTO and sick leave.

The Land Trust owns and manages a network of nature preserves that are open to the public and holds conservation easements on properties that remain in private ownership.

The organization focuses on protecting critical habitat for fish and wildlife, conserving lands that are important for water quality, connecting existing conservation lands, and keeping prime farmland in agriculture.
