Winter Birding at the Goetchius Wetland Preserve

Winter can be the dreariest time of year in the Finger Lakes. Gone are the verdant hues of hillside forests, and the melodic calls of native songbirds. It is easy to look past the icy months and yearn for the return of spring and the fragrance of flowering trees and wildflowers. To me, winter is the most peaceful time of the year. Mechanized sounds are snuffed out by fresh fallen snow, while most organisms are tucked away underground or in a warm den awaiting the return of sunshine. I also find winter to be a time of stark beauty and surprise. In our region we are fortunate to have these drab months punctuated by visits from our feathered friends who breed in the Arctic tundra and boreal forests. Each winter, I await the opportunity to observe common redpolls, rough-legged hawks, crossbills, and northern shrike. During the course of this winter, all of these birds have been seen on Finger Lakes Land Trust preserves. Read More...
