Employment Opportunity: Development Associate

Position Summary:  Reporting to the Director of Development and Communications, the Development Associate is responsible for providing high-level administrative support, maintaining accurate records, and helping with special projects to grow all aspects of a comprehensive fundraising and communications department.

Job description:

The Development Associate is responsible for donor database gift processing, timely gift acknowledgments, donor tracking, and special projects as assigned.  The Development Associate helps the department successfully engage donors and cultivate new relationships, provides high quality customer service, and provides administrative support to the department and to the director.  Additionally, this position assists with the design of print materials, including invitations, reports, posters, and other marketing materials.  The Development Associate will join a team that includes the Assistant Director of Development and a Major Gifts Officer.

The successful candidate will:

  • Process gifts and prepare acknowledgement letters and other correspondence.
  • Maintain accurate foundation, corporation and individual donor files.
  • Create monthly fundraising reports, analytical reports and other reports as needed.
  • Research individual, corporate and foundation prospects; prepare summaries on their interests, giving priorities, giving history, and proposal requirements.
  • Assist in the coordination and production of direct mail.
  • Assist in the management, marketing and organization of all Land Trust events. Promote the Land Trust by attending and tabling at various public outreach events.
  • Assist with the development and creation of print communication pieces.
  • Other duties as assigned by the director, including administrative responsibilities.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate careful attention to detail and enjoy working on a collaborative team, with the following qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • A minimum 2 or more years of experience in one or more of the following areas: development, donor relations, alumni relations, marketing/communications or related experience or equivalent.
  • Superior communications skills; effective organizational skills and strong detail orientation.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Raiser’s Edge and Microsoft Office applications; InDesign and Adobe Creative Suite experience a plus.
  • Ability to interact effectively and professionally with people from diverse backgrounds including staff, consultants, board members, volunteers, donors, business leaders, government officials etc.
  • Strong initiative, the ability to work both independently and as part of a team, and the ability to meet deadlines are essential.
  • Knowledge of fundraising resources such as databases, directories, and websites.
  • Able and willing to work occasional weekends and evenings; ability to physically-assist with loading, unloading equipment, materials associated with events.

The Finger Lakes Land Trust (FLLT) protects more than 21,000 acres of the region’s undeveloped lakeshores, rugged gorges, rolling forests, and scenic farmlands.  The Land Trust owns and manages a network of nature preserves that are open to the public and holds conservation easements on properties that remain in private ownership.

The Land Trust focuses on protecting critical habitat for fish and wildlife, conserving lands that are important for water quality, connecting existing conservation lands, and keeping prime farmland in agriculture. The organization also provides programs to educate local governments, landowners, and local residents about conservation and the region’s unique natural resources.

The Land Trust has 15 dedicated staff members, more than 200 active volunteers, and an annual operating budget that exceeds $1 million.

Additional Information:

This is a full-time position (40 hr/wk) based in the Land Trust’s main office in Ithaca, NY.  Salary will be commensurate with experience and includes competitive benefits.
